Associate Director Tax (Director Designate) – Oxford / London office

This is an exciting career making opportunity to lead and grow a specialist tax division in an independent top 100 firm with offices in Oxford and London. The position comes with a clear progression route to Director.

This full time role will ideally be based in our Oxford office with occasional travel to our London office. We would consider a London based candidate provided they could travel to the Oxford office for a minimum of 2 days each week.

About the role

We are looking for a driven and ambitious team player with a strong technical background to deliver a wide range of personal and corporate tax advisory services.

This is a strategic hire for the firm. The plan is for this person to progress to Director provided they demonstrate strong technical ability and the ability to grow the business, generating new clients and leads. Our current Head of Corporate Tax is looking to retire and our Head of Personal Tax wishes to move away from divisional management and focus on his client portfolio and specialist advice areas including IHT planning. This Associate Director/Director Designate role has been created to lead and grow the tax division, playing a key role in our longer term business strategy. 

Reporting to the Managing Director, your key responsibilities will be to:

  • Manage and grow a varied portfolio of tax consultancy clients
  • Advise clients on a full range of personal tax services including CGT, international tax, property tax, tax returns, trusts & estates, IHT, NIC and/or employment related securities taxation and fee protection insurance.
  • Advise clients on a full range of corporate tax services including group re-organisations and restructurings, incorporations, international tax, income extraction, tax mitigation, R&D claims and EMI & EIS schemes
  • Review more complex corporate and personal tax returns and computations
  • Assist UK and international clients to structure their affairs tax efficiently
  • Alongside the Directors, create and implement a tax business strategy, consulting and drawing upon the expertise of the Board
  • Work with the large property focused client base of the practice advising them on the various taxations affecting their property transactions, including capital taxes, portfolio incorporations etc.
  • Increase our Oxford and London client base
  • Take a lead role in networking and marketing activities to win tax consultancy work
  • Work closely with Shaw Gibbs Directors to ensure the firm is providing a full range of high quality tax services for our clients
  • Measure and monitor the division’s KPIs
  • Plan and manage the work being delivered by the division
  • Line manage and develop the tax team
  • Further develop our relationship with the DFK International network

What we are looking for

This role would ideally suit a Senior Tax professional from a medium sized or mid-tier firm looking for the opportunity to step up into an Associate Director role with a Directorship and equity career path.

  • Demonstrable experience of personal, corporate and business tax advisory
  • Strong international tax advice knowledge and experience e.g. double taxation relief, transfer pricing and capitalisation
  • Significant experience managing a tax team
  • ATT or CTA qualified and preferably ACA/ACCA qualified
  • Strong UK tax knowledge across a wide range of topics
  • Ability to advise both individuals and businesses on current tax affairs
  • Excellent client relationship management skills and ability to demonstrate aptitude to undertake business development activities
  • Excellent communication skills and confident in leading client/business development events
  • Highly commercial approach
  • Specialism in international and/or property tax would be a great advantage
