Many of you reading this will have had contact with James Nelson from the Financial Planning Division, a key member of the team and responsible for developing and managing our review process.  What you may not know is that James is the first to go through the Financial Planning Development Programme at Shaw Gibbs.

James joined the team from school, having completed his A-levels and then, like many, been unsure what he wanted to do and not convinced that he knew enough about what he might want to do to commit to three or four years at University.  Referred to Shaw Gibbs by a family friend, who happened to be a financial planner with another firm, James joined us at the point that we were realising that finding good quality financial planners was difficult but that as a training organisation we could look to grow our own.

Starting in the Business Development team and focussing on taking on the review process for our existing clients, James has helped us to create a Development Programme which will take him through from Trainee through to fully qualified Financial Planner or Paraplanner, depending on how he wants his career to progress.  With this in place James embarked upon this journey last year and we fully expect to find him at the crossroads where he makes this decision at some point in 2023.

Part of this programme is completion of the QCF Level 4 Diploma in Regulated Financial Planning offered by the Chartered Insurance Institute.  This involves passing 6 units related to financial planning and taxation and James has already passed the R02 Investment principles and risk and R04 Pensions and retirement planning modules.  This qualification meets the Financial Conduct Authority’s qualification requirements for retail investment advisers and is the technical foundation for becoming a financial planner.

Alongside the formal CII qualifications runs a framework of on the job training which involves James working alongside planners and paraplanners, becoming involved in the whole advice process and learning how to apply the technical knowledge to the situations and objectives which clients bring to us.  This mentoring is a crucial element in enabling someone to develop the ability and the confidence to be able to work with clients to help them achieve what they want to achieve.

So with James firmly on the route to making his career in financial planning we find ourselves looking now for “the next James” to join the team and in 10 years’ time we hope to see a team of planners and paraplanners who have graduated from the Development Programme which James began.
