International Specialist Team

With offices in London and Oxford we are located in two of the UK’s key inward investment hubs. We have a specialist team with extensive experience of acting for international businesses and advising on international tax.

Setting up business in the UK

When setting up business in the UK, negotiating the financial and HR regulative environments can be time consuming and costly. Outsourcing these functions to Shaw Gibbs will allow you to concentrate on UK growth, whilst reducing your risk and ensuring compliance in the following areas:

Our extensive network of contacts means we can also act as a conduit to: lawyers, bankers, insurance brokers and property agents who are experienced in advising inbound companies.

Overseas expansion

If you are a UK company with physical overseas expansion in your sights, we can advise you on the best routes by referring you to a member of our international network for in-country advice. Our DFK membership means that wherever in the world you want to do business, we can draw on the experience of independent firms like ours, who also share our client-focused approach.

If you are looking to trade overseas our advice will be tailored to the industry you operate in, your trade and contractual relationships, for example you might require advice on:

  • The Union Customs Code
  • VAT point of sale regulations
  • Income recognitions
  • Stock valuation
  • Implications on cross-border shipping
  • Intellectual property
  • Warranties and associated provisions

We have experience of acting as group and component auditors and liaising with group auditors as necessary and can provide a stock-take should one be required.

Non-resident tax

Non-residents need to file their tax returns to the UK tax authorities. We can help individuals assess whether or not they are UK resident for tax purposes under the Statutory Residence Test.

Additionally, we can advise employers and employees of the UK tax and social security implications of working in and out of the UK for both UK and non-UK employers.

For more information see our personal tax page.

Non-domiciled tax

Non-domiciled individuals need to file their tax returns to the UK tax authorities. and make claims under the relevant double tax agreements in place with their home location. We help our non-domiciled clients to file their returns, ensuring that double taxation is kept to an absolute minimum.

Additionally, we can advise employers and employees of the UK tax and social security implications of working in and out of the UK for both UK and non-UK employers.

For more information see our personal tax page.

US tax compliance

Relevant US persons (those with a US passport, Green Card or born in the US) are required to submit an annual US tax return wherever they reside, with few exceptions. In addition, US persons resident abroad are required to submit an annual form in respect of foreign financial accounts they own or have control over.

Shaw Gibbs, working with a carefully selected IRS registered preparer, is able to assist US persons resident in the UK in becoming compliant with their annual filings and remaining US compliant, without incurring late filing penalties. For more information see here.

Our international network (DFK)

We are members of the DFK International network, a worldwide association of independent accounting, tax and business advisory firms who have been advising clients with interests in more than one country for more than 45 years. DFK includes more than 214-member firms, located in 92 countries across 400 offices.
